While her music is steeped in the tribal and pop rhythms of her West African homeland, Benin-born, Paris-based Kidjo effortlessly slides across musical boundaries—blending a variety of styles, from funk, salsa, jazz and rumba to souk and makossa. One of the most electrifying performers in pop, she has been embraced by the world artistic community, collaborating with such international superstars as Carlos Santana, Gilberto Gil and Dave Matthews. “Music is not only emotion and groove,” says Ms. Kidjo. “It’s something that speaks for a culture and its people.”

Samite Mulondo is at once a refugee and a pilgrim, a wanderer with as many homes as his music leads him to enter. He sings in a bright, sweet tenor; accompanied by his extended family of thumb pianos and percussion instruments that have come to him at different points during his travels.
